Soapstone Carvings (or Steatite)
Soapstone is a soft, easily carved, metamorphic rock that is a granular form of the mineral talc. The natural colors range from grey to green. It has soap like feel and resists heat and acids. The Inuit take the soapstone from the quarry in chunks that they have sawed by hand. They then break the chunks up into various sizes and begin carving with tools and files. The rough carving goes through the process of sanding – it is here that the word soap is derived - from the mixture of water and wet/dry sandpaper. After all edges are smoothed the carving is then hand waxed with a heavy coat of hard wood floor paste. The carving is then placed in the oven to melt the wax and give it sheen. The final step is the etching, which is done with knives, and sharp tools to put fine detail like claws, eyes and hair on animals. Sanikiluaq has approximately 160 carvers, all carrying on from past family members.
